Lake Comedero Bass Fishing
Ron Speed takes clients on bass fishing trips In 37 years of booking Americans on bass fishing trips to Mexico I can only remember one time our clients had this much fun catching bass. That was the first year we started on Lake Guerrero in 1973. That has been a long time ago but history does repeat itself or at least it seems like it sometime.

Man oh man what a great season we have going now at Comedero. Clients are returning and booking to go back next season and many are booking to go back this season.

Lake El Salto bass fishingI have never received so many letters of testimonial. I am going to put a couple in this newsletter and point you to the rest on our website. If you look at our daily fishing reports on this site you will see that almost all the boats are catching 100 bass a day on a very wide selection of lures including topwaters, spinners, cranks, worms--- just about anything that moves they are eating.

bass fishing on Lake El SaltoThe new big American made bass boats--Xpress--are a real hit with all clients. I just wish we could have had these boats 20 years ago on Comedero but at least we have them now for everyone to enjoy. Several clients liked them so well they returned home and bought them a boat just like ours in Mexico. They are wide boats that have a middle seat that comfortably seats 3 passengers. The have Yamaha outboards, live wells, electric trolling motors, steering wheel & console, and comfortable cushion swivel fishing seats.

The word is really getting around about this fabulous bass lake. We entertained a camp full of outdoor writers, magazine writers, and TV people a couple weeks ago and now great articles are appearing all over the USA. One client sent us a great write-up yesterday in the Chicago newspaper. We have kept Comedero pretty much a secret for 20 years and just let word of mouth carry us. Last season when fishing slowed at Salto we were forced to move all those Salto clients to Comedero. The result is that the secret is out.

We are just getting started on our prime season of spawning so why not call us and book your best bass trip in your lifetime. Weather is fantastic every day this time of the year. Call your buddy, grab a few lures, let us supply the rods & reels, and come down and let us show you a great time. Call us at 1-800-722-0006 toll free. If you can’t go this year call us anyway so we can talk fishing.

Be sure to tune in to “One More Cast” with Shaw Grigsby on the Versus Channel on Friday February 8th at 11am EST to see Shaw in action on Lake Comedero.

comments: I just returned from Lake Commodero fishing with JW Peterson and his group. Omar, Jorge, and the rest of the staff, guides, and cooks were phenominal. Everyone went out of their way to ensure that our trip was fantastic. It helped of course that I caught my personal best bass at 10lbs and 3 oz. JW and I caught great fish everyday, and this trip will always be one of my best memories. I have already committed to go again for the 6th time next January. Until then, I will count the days.

Lake El Salto Bass Fishing

bass fishing on Lake El SaltoIn my last newsletter I said El Salto is back. Well I am saying it again. It definitely is back to normal after such an “off year” last year. All of our groups so far this season have caught lots of bass and had a great time. All the things that made this lake the #1 bass destination in the world for 10 years are back.

The lake is full of all sizes of black bass and they are biting. So far the shallow water bass are biting a wide variety of lures including topwaters. So far the chrome and blue Zara Spook has been smokin' red hot.

Besides the fantastic fishing this lake has been so popular because of the short ride from the Mazatlan airport. It is only 1 hour and 20 minutes from the airport mostly on a four lane toll road. Almost all bass fishermen the world over have heard of El Salto lake. We have clients who come all the way from Japan to fish with us at El Salto. Literally hundreds of T.V. shows and magazine articles have been done on this great lake.

Lake El Salto bass fishingWhat most people don’t know I that we have the only camp at water’s edge. At full pool it is 1 minute from your bed to your boat. Some clients have booked with other promoters and later found out they are staying in a motel 30 minutes away from the lake. To me, a fishing camp should be on the water or at least close enough to see the water. That’s all part of the trip.

bass fishing on Lake El SaltoOur lakeside camp is the most beautiful of any of our camps over the past 37 years. Our beautiful green gardens sure look good when we are freezing up here in the States.

I advise you to come on down this season as the fish are biting now. Who knows what next season will be doing.

Brazil Peacock Bass Fishing
The Otter Peacock Fishing tour boatIt is just amazing to me how Gilberto Castro continues to put our clients on fish. Even when the water is high and conditions are very poor. Gilberto always seems to find biting fish.

Our season on the Rio Negro started out with very high water but our clients still caught peacock bass. Gilberto is the owner and captain of the houseboat “Otter”, the largest and finest houseboat in Brazil.

Currently we are in the middle of our Winter season. The water levels have gone down to almost a perfect level now so the last half of the season will be outstanding. I am taking a group in a couple of weeks and can’t wait to tangle with the mighty peacock bass.

There are 13 in my group and we have been going together for 15 years without missing a year. We have more fun than you can imagine. This trip is the highlight of our entire year.

Why not give this trip a try as I know you won’t be disappointed. You might even break Vernon Neely of Dallas record of 24 lbs. caught a couple of weeks ago.

Texas Wild Turkeys

If you have never killed a big old Rio Grande turkey then this may interest you. My youngest son, Ron Jr., is offering a few wild turkey hunts on the RSA ranch in west Texas. If you have some interest in these hunts then call him at 903-489-1400. This first year of operation he is limiting his total number of hunts for the season to 6 hunts.

Closing Comments

The Otter Peacock Fishing tour boatI feel like I am the luckiest man alive. The past 37 years getting to fish a lot of places and have a lot of fun with friends.

What I remember most is not the fishing. It is the friends. Catching a lot of fish by yourself is fun but not the same as when your buddy is with you.

We work our entire lives to make money. Why? Part of this money is used or should be used for enjoyment. My greatest enjoyment in my life has been fishing with friends. As you get older in life you will lose some of those fishing friends along the way. I lost a great friend, Carl Daniel, about 8 years ago. Carl and I had so many great times fishing together in Brazil. Carl was with me when I lost a peacock that was many pounds over 30 lbs. We don’t have Carl anymore but I have the wonderful memories.

Last week I lost my best friend of 60 years. My cousin Joe Layfield of Kerens, Texas passed away in his sleep. Joe and I fished together since we were kids. We set black bass records in the early 1970’s fishing Lake Guerrero in Mexico at one of our camps. In 1973 we caught over 300 bass in one day. We also got caught in a “bad blow” 15 miles from camp. We pounded our way back until we broke the bottom of the boat and it filled up with water. I did manage to get the boat into shallow water before it went down. Joe and I still had a 5 mile walk in the thorny brush to get back to camp. That was an adventure! I will have that memory and 1000’s more. I truly am a lucky guy.

I can tell you all that good times and bad times will come and go in life. However, those memories of good times with friends will always be with you and are priceless.

I recommend that you get a friend or friends and go fishing or hunting somewhere. Go make some priceless memories.

And remember, if you are too busy to fish and hunt, then Mister, you are too darn busy!
